Know Sunningdale,

Love Sunningdale!

Volunteers' Tea at The Rec. - Oct 2011All good wishes for the New Year of 2012 to our residents and volunteers!

The Friends of Sunningdale is organized around community activities where residents of Sunningdale get involved and take action to see improvements on their street and in the village.

Since starting in May 2011 we have been working steadily on the Adopt-a-street and Container Library community volunteering projects.

The Adopt-a-street groups in the village have grown in size and they are also making a real impact on keeping the place tidy and getting people aware of litter.

The Container Library volunteering is also gaining another volunteer soon, and we are very pleased about that.

A big Thanks is due to all our volunteers for all they have done and achieved for the village! We look forward to working steadily on in this New Year!

Joiy Chan-Meeson is the Co-ordinator for The Big Society Friends of Sunningdale

Adopt-a-street

Adopt-a-street is a borough-wide initiative which started in 2009. Local people and organisations are committed to spreading the anti-litter message. Volunteers are encouraged to collect litter in their street and local area.

Volunteering for this scheme will not mean a reduction in the Council's street cleaning schedules, it is meant to compliment and enhance this service.

Five areas have so far been adopted in Sunningdale. The active ones are:

Priory Road
Footpath 13 and the woodland path to the Rec.
Halfpenny Lane
Whitmore Lane and Dale Lodge Road
Charters School area

Click on the links above to see pictures of our volunteers at work.

At the moment there are between 2 and 16 volunteers for each of these areas, more at Charters, and they are looking forward to hearing from more residents wanting to join any of these areas or in adopting a street, contact Joiy at mmjchan@yahoo.co.uk.

Councillor Christine Bateson got the Friends of Sunningdale involved in filming by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) on Big Society projects with Adopt-a-street in focus. The Priory Road group participated in the filming and thought it was rather fun and interesting. When the finished product is ready, we will place the link to the TV footage on the website.
Adopt-a-street Duke of Edinburgh community project

The Friends of Sunningdale are proud to introduce the village's Adopt-a-street-Duke of Edinburgh community project! We presently have 4 young and enthusiastic residents of Sunningdale participating in this project.

4 young people carrying out the volunteering part of the DoE Award As part of their work towards earning the Duke of Edinburgh award, they have chosen to carry out the volunteering part of this award by adopting the woodland area that adjoins the recreation ground and footpath 13 for a period of between 3 months to 1 year. They will be holding the litter in check for this whole area, but also out and about on other roads near the woodland area. Part of the project also includes coming up with concrete designs and ideas about how the anti-litter message can be better communicated to young people. We think this is a great project as it involves young people and is such a good example of community spirit, cooperation and interaction in the village. Contact Joiy to get involved or to find out more!

Sunningdale Container Library Volunteers

Come and join Julia as one of Sunningdale’s local Library volunteers! Help us expand the Library services that you want in the village, such as local reading groups, the Home visiting service and book activities for children.

Summer Reading Challenge - The Borough's libraries are seeking to recruit Teenage Volunteers who are 15 years or older to help run 2012's Summer Reading Challenge.

The summer reading challenge encourages children between 4 to 12 years old to read 6 books over the summer with the use of rewards such as stickers, pens and bookmarks and, if they complete the challenge, a medal and certificate. Teenage Volunteers take a lead role in the libraries – talking to the children about their reading, issuing rewards, explaining the challenge to parents and generally encouraging the children to complete the challenge. Volunteering can also count towards Duke of Edinburgh awards. Full training will be given.  There is flexibility about where and when volunteers work but includes some Saturdays over the summer. Contact Joiy for further details.
Friends of Sunningdale - On the Go

We are working on other ideas such as lighting scouts to help the Borough identify non-working lights and street parties for the Diamond Jubilee.

Besides setting up the above community projects, the Friends of Sunningdale also participated in a recent Family Fun Day event held at the recreation ground.

Our stall was decked with information on the various volunteering opportunities and community projects, as well as interesting gadgets such as an energy monitor that you can borrow from the Library to monitor home use and a dynamo bike, loaned from Royal Holloway, to show how much human energy is required to power a small music system.
